Emily Borromeo (SHP `05) to Compete on NBC TV Show “The Sing Off”

Emiy Borromeo and ElementEmily Borromeo (SHP `05) and her musical group “Element” auditioned for the hit NBC TV show, “The Sing Off,” and was chosen to compete on the show. The show airs on NBC on Monday, December 9th at 9pm EST. In addition to the loads of musical talent, there are celebrity appearances with host Nick Lachey, and judges Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman of Boys II Men, and Jewel! Emily says, “It has been a truly incredible life-changing experience!”

While at SHP, Emily really developed her roots in theater and music. She even formed her own a cappella group with 3 of her close friends. With lots of practice and coaching, their friendship and musicality grew into a skill and passion she carries with her today. She never knew practicing a 4 part harmony in the chorus room at lunch time would end up with her singing in front of and impressing Ben Folds on national TV! Emily attributes a lot of this accomplishment to the support and resources from SHP, especially her chorus teacher Mr. Crocker. Tune in for this fantastic upcoming season of “The Sing Off” on NBC.

Shannon Hamilton (SJSH `04, SHP `08) Brings Goal 3 Into her Work

Since graduation, Shannon Hamilton has been working with a public health innovation group, Gobee Group, in Oakland.
They launched their first Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of a photography book showcasing four social enterprises in Kenya, “Social Enterprise Stories from Urban Kenya.” These organizations are improving the lives of everyday Kenyans through business – not charity.

For this project, they sought out the four most innovative, socially-minded organizations across all sectors in Kenya and found the biggest game changers anywhere in the world: Bridge International Academies – featured in WIRED, Sanergy – in Forbes magazine, Sun Transfer, and Jacaranda Health. Shannon is very excited about sharing the amazing work of these organizations with the world.

Here’s a link for our project and these organizations here:http://kck.st/1b3lLk8

They launched just before Thanksgiving and are nearly 25% of the way to their goal. As a quick reference: $15 gets you the e-book, and US$20+ gets you tangible awards featuring the images and stories from this project, like: limited-edition postcards, large format photographic prints, and of course the coffee table book.

Alumni Association Internship Program In Action – Watch Internship Videos

Develop the Whole Child Beyond the Classroom and for Life

Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton’s (SHS) Alumni Association recently launched their inaugural Collegiate Internship Program in 2013.  This past year, SHS helped connect 20 Sacred Heart alums to summer internships opportunities throughout the Bay Area, with most of the opportunities provided by SHS Alumni Board members.

Click here to see a series of short videos of SHS interns on the job this past summer along with their alumni employers.

The internship program was spearheaded by Peter Coleman (SHP ’88), current president of the SHS Alumni Association to “leverage and engage our community network and extend the Sacred Heart philosophy of ‘educating the whole child’ beyond the classroom and into the professional world to gain real life work experience.”

In the last 12 months, members of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board worked closely with their professional networks and friends to develop and secure numerous internships. In its first year the program provided Sacred Heart alums with 25 professional work opportunities in 14 different business sectors, including the legal, investment banking, business consulting and technology industries.  Coleman hopes the program will continue to generate and renew employer partnerships to offer valuable work experience for SHS alums.

Alumni Peter Coleman (SHP `88) works with Alumni Maxwell Watkins (SJSH `06, SHP `10) at Loyal3 in San Francisco.
